Due to a recent investigation into a Colorado church, six men have been arrested in a suspected sexual assault incident. Colorado police suspect that one youth pastor had been sexually abusing a minor for an unspecified amount of time, and the other men, who were also church leaders, knew about the abuse but did not tell authorities. The youth pastor is facing sexual assault charges as well as other charges relating to the abuse incident, and the other leaders are facing unspecified charges.

According to the report, the youth pastor is suspected of abusing a woman who attends his church who is now 22 years old since she was at least 15 years old, according to her testimony. The 35-year-old youth pastor has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and unlawful sexual contact on a child by a person in a position of trust. He faces one count of each of these charges.

Five fellow church leaders are additionally facing charges relating to this incident because the police suspect that these men knew about the sexual assault but covered it up for the youth pastor. The report is unclear as to why the police suspect these men of covering up the crimes. The report does state that the church leaders initially refused to give police reports from the youth pastor’s therapy sessions even though the officers demanded all evidence of the man’s misconduct.

It could be assumed that the church leaders may not have wanted to surrender the reports from the youth pastor’s therapy sessions due to therapist/patient privileges. Additionally, the leaders’ actions could be seen as trying to uphold those rights instead of trying to cover up the youth pastor’s purported crimes. In the case of the five leaders, as well as the youth pastor, if Colorado prosecutors cannot present enough competent evidence to prove the sexual assault charges — as well as the leaders’ supposed illegal actions — the criminal cases against these men could be dropped entirely.
